The Don't List

Usually folks are very quick to tell you what you need to do to become a better guitarist.
In today's lesson, I am going to try and highlight things you shouldn't do if you want to improve. There are a stack more things not to do, but try these on for size first.
Simple and obvious at first glance but we are all human, people slip.

THE DON'T LIST

1. Don't just follow music and technique advice blindly... Always question and adapt and apply.

2. Don't burn yourself out on only one aspect of guitar playing. Remember to find balance between technique, creativity, repertoire and theory.

3. Don't neglect your EAR. This is the key to your music. Practice ear training and transcribing.

4. Don't hurt your hands. Tendonitis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and such are not your friends.

5. Don't hurt your back and neck. Most guitarists slouch. Not good for your back and neck. Don't damage this part of yourself. Long term effects of poor posture can be debilitating..
Take care to maintain proper posture, this will help your health and your guitar playing.

6. Don't forget to exercise your creativity: This is what its all about. Write write write.

7. Don't underestimate yourself: As a performer and artist, you need a high level of self confidence. Learn to build that.

8. Don't OVERestimate yourself: Confidence is key, but arrogance will get you nowhere.

9. Don't forget to live your life. It is easy to become so enthralled by learning the guitar that you forget that you actually have a life to lead, and experiences to gain.

10. Don't neglect your gear: Keep it in tip top condition and make provision for unforeseen circumstances. If your gear doesn't work, you don't work.
