Simple Single String Speed Exercise

With so many single string speed exercises phrased as 16th notes, I though a change might be in order.

Here is a single string speed exercise that should be phrased as 8th note triplets. Accenting the first note of each triplet will help to build strength to your upstrokes as they are usually the weakest stroke.

Tips:

  • Use a metronome and repeat the pattern.

  • Use alternate picking and start with a down stroke.

  • Start extremely slowly and speed up gradually.

  • Repeat the pattern on all string sets if possible and move up and down the neck

  • Remember, keep the movements as small and even as possible!!!

Ex. 1

Work this one up as fast as you can get it, and then push it a little faster. THEN go back to the last couple of lessons and try to get the string crossing exercises up to the same tempo.

Experiment with the general concept of this exercise to keep it from getting boring. (Different notes, fingerings etc) Try starting it on an upstroke.
