Yet more string crossing

Here is another string crossing lesson to help practice your inside picking.
We will also be using the practice concept of  "making it difficult now to help make it easier later"
You will see that the first exercise contains string skipping, forcing the right hand string crossing mechanism to make bigger movements than in the second exercise. The thought being that once you have mastered ex. 1, you should be way more comfortable playing ex. 2.

Work on ex. 1 first and work to play it a couple of bpm faster than your current top speed. Once you have seen an increase in speed and smoothness on ex.1, start on ex. 2.

Both exercises also make great licks for your soloing arsenal. Ex. 1 features some interesting wide interval Pentatonic sounds, and ex. 2 is a more standard Pentatonic lick.

Tips:

  • Use a metronome and repeat the pattern.

  • Use alternate picking and start each exercise with a down stroke.

  • Start extremely slowly and speed up gradually.

  • Remember to isolate the means whereby you cross strings, and work on that. This is what the exercise is designed for.

  • Phrase as 16th notes.

  • Repeat the pattern on all string sets if possible and move up and down the neck

  • Remember, don't hit the strings by accident as you cross over them.

Ex. 1

Ex. 2

This time, the licks are based on the Emin Pentatonic scale (box pattern, 12th Fret) The 12th  fret 'E' note on the high E string is your root.

Have Fun!
